Pain between the shoulder blades is a common complaint, especially among people who spend long hours working at a computer, driving, or looking down at a phone. The discomfort may feel like aching, tightness, burning, or a persistent knot that is difficult to stretch out.

Common Causes

Several musculoskeletal problems can contribute to discomfort between the shoulder blades.

Poor posture: Sitting with the head forward and shoulders rounded can increase stress on the muscles of the neck and upper back.

Prolonged computer work: Remaining in the same position for hours can fatigue the muscles responsible for supporting the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Muscle tension: The trapezius, rhomboid, and other muscles around the shoulder blades may become tight or irritated from repetitive activities, stress, or prolonged positioning.

Thoracic spine stiffness: Reduced mobility in the mid-back can sometimes contribute to discomfort around the shoulder blades.

Neck-related problems: In some cases, pain around the shoulder blade may actually originate from the cervical spine. Irritated joints, discs, muscles, or nerves in the neck can sometimes produce symptoms farther away from the source.

What Can You Do?

Changing positions throughout the day is a good starting point. People with desk jobs should consider taking brief movement breaks, adjusting their monitor height, avoiding prolonged forward-head posture, and incorporating appropriate stretching and strengthening exercises.

If the discomfort continues to return despite these changes, an evaluation may help determine what structures are contributing to the symptoms.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

A chiropractic examination may include evaluation of posture, spinal mobility, range of motion, muscle tension, and neurological function when appropriate.

Depending on the findings, treatment may include chiropractic adjustments, soft-tissue techniques, stretching, therapeutic exercises, and recommendations for improving workstation ergonomics.

The goal is not simply to temporarily reduce muscle tightness, but to identify factors that may be contributing to recurring symptoms.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention?

Not all upper-back or shoulder-blade pain originates from the muscles or spine. Seek prompt medical evaluation for unexplained severe pain or symptoms associated with chest pain, difficulty breathing, significant trauma, fever, progressive weakness, or other concerning symptoms.

Experiencing Upper-Back Pain?

If persistent neck, upper-back, or shoulder-blade discomfort is interfering with work or daily activities, consider having the problem evaluated.
